10 Items to Remove from Your Resume

Top Ten Phrases You Shouldn’t Use On A Resume

The first most overused phrase is “I’m a team player.” Of course companies look for people willing to sacrifice individual success for an overall team triumph, so it’s not necessarily needed to add that to your outline of experience. However, you definitely should add a detailed experience where you and another co-worker, or department, cooperated together to meet a similar goal. Remember details are always more valuable than a vague phrase that’s probably been recycled a million times in other resumes.

“I have great communication skills.”
One of my least favorite phrases is “I have great communication skills.” The reason why this is my least favorite motto is because communication skills can basically mean just about anything. The phrase leaves your employer or recruiter guessing inside his mind what do you exactly mean by saying that on your resume. Which communication skill did you have to apply for your past employer? Did you create a slideshow presentation, or motivate other co-workers to continue to put out significant effort after a long day? Remember always state your particular accomplishment.

“I have a proven track record.”
Another phrase you should ban is “I have a proven track record.” A statement as bold as that shouldn’t just be said, it should be verified. Be specific and proud of what you’ve attained during your past employed history, and give distinguishing examples of how you’ve help past companies. What is within this “proven track record”. An additional phrase you should ban is “I’m a problem solver”. This is probably the most annoying phrase because the employer is already thinking as soon as he reads it is how. Remember, always be specific.

“I assisted in X task.”‘
“I assisted in X task” is the next phrase you should definitely boycott from your resume. This isn’t anywhere near as common as the other ones but still should be banned. Maybe you weren’t the head of a particular assignment, but saying you “assisted” abandons a blurred vibe that could damper the rest of the resume. Did you assist by answering conference calls while the lead completed a more substantial role in the project? What exactly is it that you did?

“I have a strong work ethic.”
The next common cliché is “I have a strong work ethic.” Any recruiter that reads that is probably thinking that that hasn’t been seen yet, so the best thing to do is display a descriptive instance of when you had to go the extra mile somewhere in the resume. Another hazy term that is extremely exhausted is “I’m bottom-lined focused”. You should always list specific amounts of money, time, and resources you’ve increased for the company. This could be the MOST important factor on the resume so remember to be precise.

“I’m responsible for x.”
“I’m responsible for x” is also another bland expression that has to be banned. Regularly give clear wording on what your job title was. Another phrase that should be banned is “I’m self-motivated”. Remember self-motivated people consistently discover different ways to improve what they’ve been handed, so give a descriptive example on your resume.

“I’m accustomed to a fast-paced environment.”
And finally “I’m accustomed to a fast-paced environment.” With today’s recession and unfortunate economic failures more people are working in fast-paced environments for less money. So be specific on your of resume of what challenges you had to readjust to at your previous place of employment because this is a main quality employers look for.
