How Baby Boomers Affect the Nation
The largest demographic of people in the United States are the Baby Boomers, who make up 42% of the current adult population. Most of the Baby Boomers have reached the milestone age of 50, yet this group accounts for nearly half of all the consumer goods that are purchased every year. Most of them have some form of discretionary wealth that they can use and many of them give money to their kids every year too.
How else does this demographic affect the way the nation runs every single day?
Baby Boomers are extremely social.
The idea that the older generations don’t get online and don’t use social networking is false. More than a third of all Baby Boomers are actively using social networking every day in some way, while more than half of them use a smartphone in order to access their social pages and stay in contact with people.
Baby Boomers do a lot of research.
More than 8 out of every 10 Baby Boomers that have access to the internet use the global network to access information about their overall health. About 60% of those that use a smartphone or tablet would readily use a medical app that was recommended by their doctor. Considering most of them have access to high speed broadband internet to do this research, it means Baby Boomers are finding out more about themselves now than ever before.
Baby Boomers will cause healthcare concerns in almost every community.
A vast majority of today’s Baby Boomers have at least one chronic illness that requires treatment. Some estimates have Baby Boomers requiring nearly 6 times the amount of knee transplants to be made in the near future! Nearly 4 out of every 10 Baby Boomers is overweight, has high blood pressure, and nearly a quarter of them has a walking disability that prevents the level of exercise they need to have. All of these issues will put strain on the current healthcare system.
It’s not just healthcare that will be strained.
More than 3 million Baby Boomers had some sort of cosmetic procedure done in the last year. As the population continues to age, these resources will be utilized more and more as they look to reclaim some form of their youth. This will only drive up demand, which will drive up prices, and ultimately will reduce the amount of resources that are purchased and consumed by this population.
Why Do We Need To Know About Baby Boomers?
Baby Boomers are slowly shifting into a care demographic. This means the resources they spent on goods will start being spent more on services to provide them with a reasonable quality of life. This will cause a spike in healthcare costs and possibly make it less possible to access needed consumables. The time to plan for these circumstances is now! By saving money, budgeting needs, and implementing an effective savings plan, the next generations will be able to effectively help the Baby Boomers as they were helped by them previously.
