There are more people working at home, advances in technology and changes in the way we do business have made telecommuting a very viable option for many people. As someone who works at home, it is up to you to keep yourself on schedule and productive. This may sound like a simple thing to do at first. But working at home can also provide as many distractions as it does conveniences.
Nine times out of ten, when a person is trying to find ways to increase productivity in the home office, they can start by giving their desk or workstation a good look. At first what seems like a harmless hodgepodge of homey things can end up being an unending list of distractions that keep you from being as productive as you should be. Here are some things you can look for if you are trying to increase your productivity at your home office.
When it comes to working at home, one of the biggest killers of productivity is monotony. People find that after they spend hours on a task that they have a hard time finishing out the rest of a day. While persistence is admirable, you should not just sit at your desk for hours on end. It will get tiring, and your mind will wander a lot more, which means you get a lot less done.
Sitting Long Periods
There are also several serious health conditions that could develop if you spend too long sitting in a chair, staring at a computer screen, or other similar repetitive tasks. So take a break from the desk, go out and get some air. Call a friend, or take the dog out for a walk. Even something as simple as exercises in place can help you stay focused and more productive.
Another great killer of productivity is distractions. These can take many forms. A messy desk can be distracting because it reminds you of other things you could be doing. Having toys and pictures on the desk can make it look homey, but they can also draw your attention away from your work. Move things like that out of your reach and line of sight. Get rid of the clock too, you lose more time watching the clock then you do anything else, even when you don’t realize it.
