There is no question that Abraham Lincoln had to utilize strong leadership qualities during his presidency. After all, this is the man who steered the United States through the horrors and uncertainty of the Civil War. That’s not something that just any person could have done. It required a very distinct, very powerful leadership style.
With that thought in mind, the question then is whether or not you can incorporate the leadership style of Abraham Lincoln into modern-day situations.
Lincoln’s Leadership Style
Although the United States as it existed during the Civil War was a very different time and place from the United States as it exists today, Lincoln’s leadership style continues to inspire individuals from all walks of life. In answer to the question of whether or not Lincoln’s leadership style can be incorporated into the day-to-day dealings of modern business, the fact of the matter is that you certainly can.
If you’re serious about patterning your own leadership style after Lincoln’s, there are a few things you’re going to want to keep in mind:
1. Lincoln understood the value of listening: Are you someone who listens, or are you someone who is simply waiting for your turn to speak? Abraham Lincoln had the ability to not only listen to what someone was saying to him, but he was able to listen to hidden implications that existed within the words that were being spoken. He also greatly valued the input of others.
2. Lincoln understood the value of communicating: Abraham Lincoln obviously had to possess a masterful way of giving speeches, speaking with his cabinet, or conferring with someone on a one-on-one basis. His speeches are celebrated to this day. One of the reasons for that is because Lincoln always spoke with a profound passion for the subject at hand. Even as the horrors of steering the country through the Civil War mounted, even as exhaustion and personal problems plagued him, Lincoln never lost his passion. He also appreciated the value of using language that left the door open to participation from others.
3. Lincoln understood the value of acknowledging yet controlling his emotions: This was a President who endured the hardships of being a leader in ways most of us can scarcely imagine. He never let his emotions get the better of him. He maintained a clear vision of what he wanted to accomplish, and he gripped tightly to the belief that his decisions were sound ones.
This is an excellent example of leadership.
