There are any number of different management styles out there. One of which is the Collaborative Management style. In this style various team leaders and supervisors work together with their team members to form a cohesive group. There are many advantages and disadvantages to this style of management.
One of the biggest advantages to this form of management is the continuity of the group. The team leads combined with the team members make up for any potential weaknesses found in either. This also allows for the increased strength of the merging of the two. Another major advantage of this style of management is in the cohesion of the team leaders and the team itself. Traditional management strategy is for the team leaders or supervisors to function as the figure head of the team while directing and guiding the team members in whatever tasks they need to undertake. With Collaborative management, the team leader is as much a member of the team as those they are working with. While they have different responsibilities than the team members they are often considered equals.
While the advantages of Collaborative Management might seem better compared to traditional management strategies there are some inherent drawback with this style. One of the primary ones is that while having the team lead considered as another member of the team itself can seem great for team moral it presents problems when it comes to having to make decisions for or about the team as a leader. For instance, a team lead might not have the confidence or ability to make on the spot decisions about the team without consulting the team itself. This can lead to lengthier negotiations or diminished productivity for the team lead. Also if the team lead needs to make decisions about specific team personal that may or may not be pulling their weight or are more of a hindrance than helpful to the team; they could be reluctant to address the issue or remove the team member.
What Should You Take Away?
While traditional management has been shown to be far less effective than other types of management Collaborative isn’t a perfect solution to this problem. For certain projects or business this approach can be perfect for optimizing efficiency and productivity. However, it can also result in leaders nothing feeling confident enough to make quick or needed decisions in a timely fashion. If these drawbacks don’t seem like a major problem for your business then a collaborative management style might be what you need to boost your productivity.
