What makes a good leader? That is the question which we have been asking ourselves for generations and there are several different responses that all have some validity. Sometimes we like to see a lot of fiery emotion coming out of a leader. Sometimes we like to see a leader who is calm and composed, always assuring their team that a positive outcome will be achieved. Based on our personal preferences, we might believe that one form of emotion is superior to another form. In reality, the superior leader is able to understand their emotions and use them to their own advantage.
For many people, one of the most annoying interview questions is this: “What is your greatest weakness?” The reason why this question is asked is to determine how a person uses their weaknesses to a personal advantage. By understanding how we are each perceived from an emotional standpoint, we have a better understanding of how people will interact with us. If we know that certain situations make us angry, we can prepare to fuel that emotion into something positive or understand why others might have a negative reaction to that emotion.
It isn’t the emotion that makes a leader great. It is understanding the concepts of the Emotional Intelligence leadership theory that makes a leader effective.
Emotional Intelligence Is All About Control
When a leader is upset and is yelling at their team, what will be the reaction of that team? Some people might be inspired to change, others might be fearful of a future mistake, but most people will simply tune that leader out. If they can’t control their own emotions, then how can the leader hope to control the activities of others around them? Most people who report to a leader who is emotionally out of control will not listen to what that leader has to say.
This is why emotional control is so important. Without personal control and awareness of how emotions affect the decisions, then there is no emotional intelligence. There are simply reactionary thought processes that are not very effective in most situations. By being able to set the emotions aside or use them appropriately, more logic can be used in any given situation.
No matter what theory of leadership is employed, understanding the Emotional Intelligence leadership theory is critically important. It works with every leadership style because it helps a leader manage their own emotions and the emotions of their team. In doing so, more greatness can be achieved.
