Is It Good to Be Hands Off?

Hands off management style involves very little management, almost no monitoring and no intervention in the day-to-day activities of the employees or team members. Every team member or employee knows his or her job and is capable of delivering and they work with autonomy or independently. Even if there are teams working together, each member enjoys a degree of autonomy.

Hands off management style has many advantages. It doesn’t curtail the potential of an employee. One enjoys the necessary freedom to innovate, to set his or her own schedules and get the job done in their own convenient way, but of course while adhering to the deadlines. The typical problems of authoritarian management or directive management don’t exist with hands off management style. The freedom and flexibility as well as autonomy enjoyed by employees lead to greater satisfaction. Attrition is limited and the company can flourish owing to the inputs of various people, which is not possible if the leadership is autocratic.

The management or the owner of the business has plenty of free time which can be used in myriad ways for the betterment of the company. Many organizations need their senior executives or managers to be too focused on daily affairs and that may impair the company’s growth and development in the longer run.

What Are the Risks?

Hands off management style works only in industries or companies where the employees are specialists. Industries where employees have to be told what they should do, have to be monitored so they don’t spend idle hours at work or end up being nonproductive and in any job that calls for managerial supervision or intervention, such a management style doesn’t work at all.

Hands off management style can lead to chaos. If the employees cannot get together and work with a focus on the company’s best interests then the whole scenario can be a mess. Everyone may work independently and without any managerial intervention, the preset objectives may never get accomplished.
