INTP is one of the sixteen personality types as classified by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator or MBTI. INTP is an acronym for introversion, intuition, thinking and perception.
I is for Introversion
As opposed to extraversion, introversion implies that a person is more prone to stay quiet and to himself or herself. A person would be reserved, will have very few close friends and would confide in only one or two persons. Such a person will not have and will not want to have a large social circle.
N is for Intuition
A person with INTP personality will be intuitive, will look at the macro picture and would be drawn more by the abstract than the tangible.
T is for Thinking
The ‘T’ is thinking and that makes such a personality very objective. People with this personality will always give priority to facts, logic, rational or objective assessment. They would not focus on sentiments, emotions, personal preferences or biases.
P is for Perception
A person with INTP personality will allow perceptions to prevail and would delay inferential analysis. They would not judge a situation or a person objectively or factually and would rather have their perception dictate the path forward.
This is a unique personality type because of the contradicting traits of thinking and perceiving. Such people will always have a tussle of choosing between what they think and perceive. It is rare that thinking and perceiving are exactly the same.
Some of the most popular people with INTP personality type are Socrates, Isaac Newton, Rene Descartes, Carl Jung, Albert Einstein, Blaise Pascal, James Madison, Gerald Ford and Dwight D. Eisenhower.
INTP personalities are often regarded as analysts or logicians. They are abstract thinkers and yet they are amazing analysts. They are inventive which allows them to come up with original thoughts or perceptions and interpretations. They are open minded, enthusiastic about every new idea or every new perspective to a new idea, they are objective in their assessment but not compromising the need to question, even if it is something that has been long established, proven or considered sacrosanct. People with INTP personality are straightforward and very honest.
There are some weaknesses in such a personality. People with INTP personality are likely to be withdrawn, which can make one a recluse. They are very private, often insensitive, absent minded and at times condescending. They don’t like rules or restrictions and they would consistently second guess their own thoughts and perceptions.
