How a man or woman copes with stress will depend largely on his or her personality. ISFJ is one of the sixteen personalities as defined by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. It is very difficult, near impossible, to generalize causes of stress or how one must deal with stress. Numerous factors play a role, including but not limited to age, gender, socioeconomic conditions, relationships and health.
There are certain universal causes of stress. Financial problems, health concerns, careers, familial troubles and any kind of turmoil that derails the normal scheme of things will cause stress. But in addition to these universal causes of stress, there are some that affect only a certain personality. Thus, there are some situations which will put a woman or man with ISFJ personality under stress.
When is ISFJ Under Stress?
The acronym ISFJ stands for Extraversion, iNtuition, Thinking and Perceiving. These are the four primary attributes of a woman or man with ISFJ personality. These very attributes can be the source or cause of stress. Extraversion or being outspoken, easy to be with, easy to talk to and a fondness for contacts with people or socializing can be an advantage. But these can be a disadvantage when there is an excess.
1. Excessive Outspokenness
A bit too much reliance on others or on socializing can cause stress to the ISFJ. Excessive idealism or an excess of conceptualizing can be stressful. Thinking too much or putting enormous importance on logic and rationality while making decisions can also put ISFJ under stress. Perceiving too much or indulging in excessive spontaneity can put ISFJ under stress.
2. Take Things Personal
ISFJ women and men have a natural tendency to take things personally. They are not very sensitive in the literal sense but they can react to criticism or lack of support in an introverted way. They would suppress their feelings. They would become shyer and will overload themselves with those very causes of stress.
3. Reluctant to Change
Reluctant to change and being too altruistic, ISFJ women and men will be under stress whenever they are put into ever changing circumstances and when they don’t want to bother others with something they need. ISFJ personalities are good-natured people and are warm, compassionate and helpful. These very traits can be the causes of stress when they are not cared for, when people exploit their helpful nature and when they think they can bear the load of others without realizing the psychological fallout of the same.
How Should ISFJ Cope with and Overcome Stress?
The first step is to know when an ISFJ is under stress. An ISFJ woman or man is stressed when they are perpetually angry or get angry abruptly, when they are extremely rigid and unnecessarily critical of others and of oneself, when they are pessimistic and lose control of circumstances they are in. One must spot these signs at the earliest to know that there is something that is causing the behavioral outbursts.
Here’s how ISFJ personalities must overcome stress.
1. Naturally Inclined to Help Others
They draw a great sense of satiation and fulfillment when they help others. This can be used to one’s advantage. It is quite likely that some people would take this help for granted and that itself can cause stress. But then one can always help others who are in genuine need of that help. This will take an ISFJ’s mind off the stressful factors and they will find some solace.
2. Incredibly Patient
But this attribute works to their disadvantage when they are under stress. They develop a tendency to wait till the causes of stress are done away with and they may wait for it to happen naturally. Causes of stress can be got rid of over time but that is not the best approach. An ISFJ personality must never be patient while under stress and should not let the problems linger. They must identify the causes of stress and meet them head on. The problems must be resolved. Finding the solution is imperative. Since ISFJ people are hard working and they are quite committed to a cause, they can use this attribute of their personality to find the solutions. This quest itself will be sufficient to reduce the impact of stress.
3. Need to Speak Out
They can appear almost broken when they are under stress. This is partly because they are humble anyway and when they have a tough time their humility can be mistaken for being completely shattered. Self esteem may take a hit and they may become more reserved and shelled. It is necessary to break this shell. One must find an activity that can reignite the enthusiastic nature of ISFJ and one must also find someone to share their feelings with.
