According to the Briggs-Meyer personality test an ISTP person is introverted, sensing, thinking and perceiving. They see the world with flexible logic, are independent and interact spontaneously with the world around them. The ISTP is fascinated with the mechanics and tools. They like to master the use of mechanical things including instruments and are very interested in how things operate. The ISTP enjoys his space and chooses friends carefully.
AS the third most common personality in the general population with 5% being ISTP, men largely outnumber women with 9% of the population being male ISTP versus only 2% of women. Interestingly a large percentage of male college athletic scholarship recipients are ISTP and most likely than all other personality types to suffer from heart problems.
At work the ISTP is motivated by their mastery of mechanical things and the results of using those tools whether they are traditional tools like hand tools or computers that explore technology. They like to apply their mind to skills that solve problems. The ISTP is not suited for desk jobs. They prefer higher risk, action packed jobs that allow them to dive right in and get to the solution. They prefer autonomy and don’t like being constrained by bureaucracy.
The top career choices for ISTPs are:
- Software developers
Jobs that are mundane like a receptionist, doctor, dentist or a teacher are not well suited to the ISTP who prefer more adventure and problem solving.
In relationships the ISTP does not enjoy jabber. These are action oriented people who would much rather be doing than talking about doing or simply talking at all. They look at things logically and slightly removed therefore become rapidly irritated when they see inefficiency around them. Otherwise they are fun-loving adventurous types who like to drag their friends and family into the action.
The ISTP is handy around the house and will jump to fix physical problems but they are quite reserved emotionally finding their emotions boring or of little interest. They like their freedom to do their own thing and this personality experiences a high rate of relationship failures.
As parents the typical scenario of a dad working on the car with his son can describe the ISTP. They show their love by teaching and practicing skills with their kids. They don’t come across as very affectionate and certainly aren’t very verbal.
Famous ISTPs include, Bruce Lee, Tiger Woods, Amelia Earhart and Lance Armstrong.
