ISTP is one of the sixteen personality types as classified by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator or MBTI. ISTP is an acronym for introversion, sensing, thinking and perceiving.
I is for Introversion
As opposed to extraversion, introversion implies that a person is more prone to stay quiet and to himself or herself. A person would be reserved, will have very few close friends and would confide in only one or two persons. Such a person will not have and will not want to have a large social circle.
S is for Sensing
A person with ISTP personality will be sensible or in other words, pragmatic. He or she will be drawn more by what is tangible or concrete than what is abstract or intangible.
T is for Thinking
The ‘T’ is thinking and that makes such a personality very objective. People with this personality will always give priority to facts, logic, rational or objective assessment. They would not focus on sentiments, emotions, personal preferences or biases.
P is for Perception
The ‘P’ is perception or perceiving. A person with ISTP personality will allow perceptions to prevail and would delay inferential analysis. They would not judge a situation or a person objectively or factually and would rather have their perception dictate the path forward.
This is a unique personality type because of the contradicting traits of thinking and perceiving. Such people will always have a tussle of choosing between what they think and perceive. It is rare that thinking and perceiving are exactly the same.
Some of the most popular people with ISTP personality type are Clint Eastwood, Frank Zappa, Milla Jovovich, Zachary Taylor and Tom Cruise among others.
People with ISTP personality are energetic and optimistic. They are often cheerful. Their stress-free attitude makes them mingle with others with relative ease. They are usually more assertive than normal people. They are creative but they are also practical. People with ISTP personality have this unique trait of combining rational or logic with spontaneity. That makes them very desirable in some ways. They are good at prioritizing and can be very helpful in times of crises. They can also handle their own crises quiet well.
People with ISTP personality can often be stubborn. They can get irritated and be insensitive at times. They are also relatively reserved. They get bored quite easily which is why they keep looking for something new to do. They have troubles committing to long term relationships and plans and at times indulge in risky behavior.
