There are some very well defined styles of management. These have been made popular by business schools and there are certain classifications based on years of studies. While the premise of management styles is fascinating and quite diverse, what one often wonders is if management styles are universal or if they vary based on numerous factors.
The purpose of all management styles is the same. The objective is to accomplish the goals preset by the company. Every manager or leader wants a team or the subordinates to be efficient, professional, punctual, dedicated, sincere and productive among others. How one goes about achieving the results is what the various styles of management pertain to.
The Southern style management is not a particular type of leadership as defined in business schools or in any type of classification. It is just a type of leadership or way of management that has developed in the south. It is quite unique in its own way, primarily because of the cultural and societal influences. While business schools can groom a person to develop a certain style of management, natural leadership styles will always have an influence of a person’s culture, upbringing, social values and other behavioral attributes.
The Southern style management can be authoritarian or democratic, consultative or laissez faire. But those same leadership approaches will be laced with cultural influences. Subtlety would be a quintessential element and sarcasm will rarely be a feature in the style. Bill Gates was once infamous for his sarcasm at meetings and when his subordinates pitched new ideas. That is not something the southern style management would have. One would rather be subtle while expressing the same displeasure.
Frankness is also a striking difference. Up north, most people would be extremely frank or upfront, almost to an extent of sounding rude. Down south, most people would be polite, even when they are expressing some concerns. While the psyche is almost the same, the manner in which one expresses up north and down south is quite different.
So regardless of the particular type of leadership, the southern style management will inculcate the local values, the cultural and societal sensibilities in the ways a leader or manager would take care of the team or the company. Southern style management is not anything distinctive or dissimilar to the established and well defined styles of leadership. It is just a subcategory that can work with any of the leadership types.
