Many people know Tony Dungy as the lead coach for the Indianapolis Colts who led them to a Super Bowl victory in the early 2000′s. Dungy was also the first African American coach to win the Super Bowl. Over his career, Dungy has faced plenty of tragedy, both personal and professional. However, he has never let that deter him. During his time as a coach, Dungy has also developed his own personal leadership style. Here, we will talk about just a few of the tenants of his leadership style.
Make the Lives of Others Better
Leaders often think about how they can make their own lives better. While this is well and good, dynamic leaders do not think of only themselves: instead, they think about those around them. True leaders think about the steps they are taking each day to allow those around them to flourish. Think about how you are (or can) improve the lives of those around you, such as your colleagues and your employees. Then, do your best to make those things happen. A happier workforce is a more loyal workforce and a more cohesive team.
In Times of Struggle, Turn to Faith
As mentioned above, Dungy has been through lots of personal struggles in his life. But when times have gotten their toughest, he has always had his faith to turn to. Dungy is a devout Christian. He feels that his faith is a real cornerstone that has helped him overcome adversity, as well as tragedy like the death of his son. Even if you are not religious, you can still turn to your faith in others to help carry you through. Know that others are there to help you, and will do what they can. Let them know that they can rely on you, as well.
The Journey is Where Real Growth Happens
Winning is, in the life of a sports coach, very important. However, Dungy feels that winning is just another part of the journey. Learning takes place on the way to an achievement, not only after that particular achievement is attained. Think about ways that you can learn at each step of your journey, whether you win or succeed. In this way you can apply what you have learned in the past to what you plan to do in the future. This makes your odds of winning exponentially greater.
