Leadership And Being A Great Leader
The world is full of people that have been thrust into leadership roles. This does not mean that they are good leaders let alone great leaders. It just means they were the right person at the right time. Leadership is something that comes naturally to some people. The problem is in order to become a great leader takes a lot of work. It is not as easy as just being in charge.
Understand the Big Picture
The first thing that a great leader must have is the big picture. The organization or team must always come first. Personal gain is a side effect of great leadership. The leader must never put themselves above the team and the goals of the team must always take priority over all else.
Next the great leader must always be honestly evaluating the progress of the situation. Honesty is the hard part. We lie to ourselves more than anyone else. If a leader cannot be honest with themself then the goals will never be fully achieved. This is the first stumbling block of leadership.
Next the great leader must work hard to remove all obstacles from the success of the project. This can be hard because sometimes the main obstacle may be a friend, of in some cases the main obstacle may be the leader. Nothing can stand in the way of the goal. So it is important that the leader is able to provide all the resources necessary for success.
In addition the great leader must be able to set realistic goals. While the overall goal may be a bit lofty, the smaller steps must be achievable. These goals must also be measurable. The most important part of reaching a goal is to understand when you have met it. Immeasurable goals are as bad as having no goals at all.
One of the most overlooked parts of being a great leader is setting the mood. It is important that the people working for the goals are happy. Put people in a bad situation and nothing will ever get done. While creating competition is important, everyone must feel valuable. Everyone must understand what is happening and feel like they are important.
Finally the great leader must set the example. Hard work is important but not as important as everyone seeing what the leader is doing. The old saying do what is say, not what I do does not apply to leadership. This is one of the biggest mistakes leaders make. They believe because they are in charge that they can always make people perform.
Being a great leader is not as easy as just being in charge. Even people with natural leadership ability need to work on the finer points of leadership in order to be great.
